To say 2023 was bittersweet for Ryan is an understatement. Capping three decades at the PlayStation business and four years as its leader, he will retire in March after a busy year for hardware. There was the PSVR 2 headset, the Access Controller for disabled gamers and PlayStation Portal, a handheld option for on-the-go gamers. The PS5 sold over 47 million units as of September after overcoming semiconductor chip shortages. PlayStation Productions was busy, too, as “The Last of Us” became an HBO hit before the releases of show “Twisted Metal” and film “Gran Turismo” on Peacock and in theaters, respectively. His bittersweet year was also heavy on the “bitter.” After Bungie was acquired by SIE for $3.7 billion in 2022, the “Destiny 2” studio reportedly cut around 100 jobs in October because of decreases in engagement for the live service, with subsequent reports indicating Bungie was struggling to operate autonomously within Sony. Layoffs also affected “Last of Us” studio Naughty Dog and several internal support studios at SIE. Then in December, PlayStation studio Insomniac Games suffered a massive hack in which details on game builds, roadmaps and private employee information were stolen.
