Batwoman‘s Ruby Rose Rebukes Critics of Her Casting: ‘I Wish We Would All Support Each Other and Our Journeys’
Ruby Rose issued a POW! BAM! ZONK! this weekend to those who have negative things to say about her recent casting in The CW‘s Batwoman series-in-development.
The Orange Is the New Black alum, who last week landed the Arrowverse’s coveted role, left Twitter and turned off public comments on her Instagram account in order to avoid rampant criticism that she was not the right choice for the part.
Slated for a potential 2019 premiere, Batwoman would follow the adventures of Kate Kane — the second incarnation of the Batwoman character in DC Comics lore, introduced in 2006 — who is described as “an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter.” The character first will appear in the Arrowverse crossover event in December.
Rose came out as a lesbian at age 12, a fact she noted in some of her final tweets.
“Where on earth did ‘Ruby is not a lesbian therefore she can’t be batwoman’ come from — has to be the funniest most ridiculous thing I’ve ever read. I came out at 12? And have for the past 5 years had to deal with ‘she’s too gay’ how do y’all flip it like that?” she posted, per several sources. “I didn’t change. I wish we would all support each other and our journeys.”
Rose went on to note that when women and minorities “tear each other down it’s much more hurtful than from any group. But hey/love a challenge.” She also cited that the past month has been a “rollercoaster,” and that she would take a break from Twitter to focus on work. “If you need me,” she signed off, “I’ll be on my Bat Phone.”
I wish the CW and DC would stop shoving their liberal agenda down the throats of America and just make entertaining superhero shows, but such is life…

@Anne NONE of those countries are socialist. They have a degree (some more than others) of social policies which can be called socialist, but in none of them, literally *none* of those countries is there any economy but capitalism. Which is why they are successful and worthy to be compared to. I live in a true post-communist/ socialist country, and believe me it is not pretty.

I don’t know much about her as a person, but it’s possible to not support something/someone and not be an a-hole about it. Twitter can be fun, but it’s also the best place for “fans” to get their online bullying on. Just don’t watch if you’re unhappy with the casting.

The criticisms I’ve seen from women of colour were valid and they didnt @ her. Articles were going around acting like she was the first actual lesbian cast on a superhero show when Nafessa Williams of Black Lightning exists.

Her sexuality nor the charavter’s sexuality is the problem I have for this show. It’s her lack of acting talent. Her scenes in Orange in the New Black are painful because she doesn’t know how to use her face and she comes off as wooden. I’d love for her to prove me wrong, but with the combination of Ruby Rose and the writing from Caroline Dries this has “dud” written all over it….which means this will be on the air for 8 seasons.

While she’s extremely attractive, she’s not that great of an actress. I don’t watch any of those shows, so I’m not sure if acting is a priority in their casting decisons.
But on OITNB, she stuck out like a sore thumb among skilled thespians.

Acting is just that… acting. By nature it playing something your not. I dont think it shoukd be a requirement that only gay cgaracter can play gays. No more than i would say no fay should be cast as straight. Talent is talent. Actors should be able to audition for any part they want to play.
In this case the hullabaloo does apply as Its an open and out lesbian cast as a lesbian. She looks the part, riding off the success of The Meg. It’s a great choice, but her real life orientation shouldn’t matter.

I’m just curious if anyone who says Ruby Rose can’t act has seen her episode of Dark Matter. I can’t speak about her part on Orange Is the New Black because I’ve never seen it. I can say she was alright in John Wick 2 and xXx 2, but forgettable in Pitch Perfect 3 and Resident Evil Final Chapter. But i really thought she was great in her episode of Dark Matter, so if she brings what she brought to her Dark Matter role she should be great as Batwoman.

How many times must we go through this? People were upset about Grant being cast as Barry and Melissa being cast as Kara. Both of those proved to be great choices. Let’s see Ruby as Batwoman before we decide if she is right for the part of not.
She’s definitely the right choice, judging by her looks only; her being a lesbian or not is totally irrelevant. Never seen her in anything, hope she’s talented as well.

Most people seemed to praise Chyler Leigh playing the coming out of Alex Danvers. The homophobes didn’t like the idea of a lesbian character on Supergirl but even they weren’t complaining she wasn’t convincing enough. If anything she was too convincing.
The gayathon on the CW is what makes the show unwatchable. Nothing but social justice warrior BS on TV now. Whatever happen to just solid storytelling and good actors which she is not.
