Outland Denim and Spell Launch a Retro Denim Collection `

After a successful crowdfunding campaign and making strides in sustainable and ethical fashion, Australian brand Outland Denim is following through on its goal to serve as a trusted manufacturer for other labels.

The company unveiled Friday a women’s collection made in partnership with fellow Aussie label Spell. Outland provided the production services at its Cambodian facilities for a five-piece bohemian capsule collection chock-full of ’70s influences and sustainable qualities.

Outland announced its plan to open its manufacturing facilities to other brands in August as a way to scale its strong ethics throughout the fashion industry. It developed the Maeka Standard—a combination of its rigorous policies that center on zero exploitation and jeans that are made without slavery, poor labor standards or environmentally harmful materials and techniques—and will extend this framework to the brands it works with. The brand has already developed a capsule collection for Karen Walker.

Formerly known as Spell & The G*psy Collective, Spell was founded 10 years ago by two sisters with a commitment to sustainability. The brand is known for its ethereal apparel marked by floral prints and flowing fabrics. Its partnership with Outland allows the label to dive into denim while maintaining its own responsible standards.

“We’ve spent the past three years mapping our supply chain, and denim has been difficult to source ethically—working with Outland, a brand which exists to eliminate exploitation, while also using less natural resources and chemicals in its Cambodian facilities—we’ve been introduced to an entirely new standard of supply chain transparency and responsibility,” said Elizabeth Abegg, co-founder and chief brand officer at Spell. “During a time where partnerships are integral to creating real change, we are so proud of this collaboration.”

The Outland Denim x Spell collection includes a chambray shirt, high-rise flare jeans with center front and back seams, a long-sleeve denim jumpsuit, a full-length denim skirt and a pair of raw hem jean shorts. Each piece is made with organic cotton, zero harmful chemicals and 100 percent vegan materials. Water- and energy-saving technologies were used in the wash and finishing processes.

The lineup is available on the Outland Denim and Spell websites. The collection’s price range is $149-$199.

Outland Denim was founded in 2011 as a way to provide employment opportunities and living wages to vulnerable populations in Cambodia. Employees receive education and life skills training to arm them with the tools needed to live independently. Ever since, the company has deployed responsible production methods, such as its use of natural fibers and sustainable washing, to use business as a force for good for both the environment and its people.

According to founding CEO James Bartle, real change will be made when other companies follow suit. “We need to collaborate on solutions if we are going to revolutionize the fashion industry, if we are going to use it to enrich the lives of people and protect the planet,” he said.
