Diesel Taps Japanese Upcycling Brand for Red Tag Project

Collaboration is key for Diesel.

Since 2018, it has enlisted the help of designers to reimagine its denim and sportswear heritage through its Red Tag project—and now Diesel is back with a collaboration with Readymade by Yuta Hosokawa.

The Osaka, Japan-based upcycling brand was founded in 2013 and quickly became known for its use of vintage military tent and duffel bag fabrics. However, for Diesel Red Tag, it replaced its trademark textiles for upcycled Diesel denim.

The limited-edition collection features six unisex pieces, including a patched Western collar jacket, a utility jacket, a duffel bag, a baseball cap, tapered jeans for women and wide-legged jeans for men.

Items will be available January 2020 at select Diesel flagship stores in Japan, as well as a network of retailers curated by Diesel Red Tag partner Tomorrow. The collection was first presented last month during Paris Fashion Week.

Diesel Red Tag x Readymade is the project’s fifth collaboration. Previous partners include Shayne Oliver of Hood By Air, Glenn Martens of Y/Project, Gosha Rubchinskiy of GR-Uniforma and Samuel Ross of A-Cold-Wall.

Last month, Atelier & Repairs embarked on a similar project with Gap in honor of its 50th anniversary. The retrofit and repair company reimagined a number of Gap’s vintage pieces to create an updated collection. It also worked on related projects for Levi’s Dockers and other brands.
