Designers are inspired by the jean jacket. The wardrobe staple provided the framework for some of the most creative hybrid styles seen on the Fall ’19 runway.
The wintery wonderland Chanel collection by Karl Lagerfeld and Virginie Viard was grounded by garments like a double-breasted leather and denim trench with a shawl collar. Signature elements like a quilted belt, chain-inspired belt buckle and camellia-shaped buttons made it uniquely Chanel.
Proenza Schouler continued to experiment with denim, adding jean vests to its oversized tailored trench coats for Fall ’19. Jamie Wei also played with long silhouettes. The designer elongated a denim moto jacket with panels of classic wool check. An off-kilter hemline and exaggerated pocket flaps added a youthful vibe to the statement coat.
Junya Watanabe’s hybrid jackets was reminiscent of the ’90s grunge scene. The designer spliced classic Truckers with piecemeal fabrics like earthy paisley and poppy floral prints, adding a flowy skirt quality to the utilitarian jackets. A riff on the half-and-half fashion trend, Cristiano Burani updated a raw hem black Trucker jacket with a cozy lime green cable knit half.
Designers also played with contrasting textures of plush fur and rigid denim. Y/Project winterized jean jackets with layers of white shearling. Natasha Zinko added pelts of bright orange faux fur to her oversized jean jacket. Sacai combined a women’s wool suit jacket with elements of a jean jacket and touches of fur.
Meanwhile, Romeo Hunte presented a hybrid jacket that channeled both old Hollywood glamour and downtown grit. The classic Trucker was swathed in gray mink and patchwork with graffiti-style lettering.
