Neon’s glow is growing brighter.
The ’80s color trend, which began last summer simultaneously across fast fashion and high-end active wear-inspired streetwear collections, shows no signs of burning out for Fall/Winter 19-20. Rather, the color story is evolving with major fashion players like Saint Laurent and Off-White using the hues as the centerpiece of their runway shows.
Saint Laurent designer Anthony Vaccarello gave fashionistas something to ’gram when he closed the show by turning the runway into a glow-in-the-dark rave. Lit only by black lights, models strutted down the runway dressed in neon orange, green, yellow and pink mini dresses, shades and heels.
Off-White was an early adopter of the hot hues, prominently featuring neon green in its Spring ’19 collection. The color reappeared for fall as a women’s tech-inspired jumpsuit and a long leather coat. For men, the label offered neon green suits with cargo pockets and exaggerated sleeves.
Christian Cowan’s risqué tights (worn as trousers) was intensified with head-to-toe shades of highlighter yellow and pink. Meanwhile, Christian Dada showcased pops of slime green tie-dye and outerwear with his urban, technical collection of coated and tape seamed separates.
Others took a subtle approach to neon. Hot pink shoes punctuated the men’s looks by Yusuke Takahashi for Issey Miyake. Les Hommes layered neon nylon tops under sporty tees. And Pronounce updated otherwise somber suiting with laser beans of neon ribbon.
