Runway Alert: Tie-Dye

Fashion is taking a trip back to the psychedelic ’60s.

With brands like Gucci, MSGM and Stella McCartney giving tie-dye the “A-OK” on the runway, and influential celebrities like Justin Bieber already sporting the laid back trend, the DIY effect is poised to become one of the most important trends to watch in Spring ’19.

Tie-dye was a key look in Proenza Schouler’s “Made in USA” collection for spring. The brand, which had instant success with its Fall ’18 $1,395 tie-dye turtleneck dress, carried the colorful look into spring with color blocked, extra-long tie-dye button-down shirts.

Virgil Abloh brought tie-dye to Louis Vuitton’s Spring ’19 runway in his first collection as the label’s men’s artistic director. The designer paired vivid red jackets and tees with red tie-dye track shorts.

Brands like N.Hoolywood and Ashley Williams embraced tie-dye’s slacker history with casual hoodies and layered T-shirts paired with pajama-style pants.

And tie-dye is an easy companion to denim. The combination remains part of the modern-day hippie uniform as seen in sustainable designer Stella McCartney’s tie-dye jumpsuit and R13’s denim short and tie-dye blazer runway ensemble.

Expect to see more as the U.S.’s growing weed culture takes hold and the outdoor market continues to influence every day fashion trends.
