Youth Culture Drives S/S 2020 Denim Trends at Kingpins New York

Denim mills brought Spring/Summer 2020 to life at Kingpins New York Wednesday with youth-oriented denim pieces loaded with color, dye effects and utility.

The Kingpins trend presentation, styled by Amy Leverton of Denim Dudes, showcased four concepts for the season with roots in cultural movements, streetwear, the outdoor market and nostalgia. Mills enhanced the themes, which were unveiled last month in Amsterdam, with conceptual garments.

High End

In High End, a trend story inspired by “millennial stoners, skaters and surfers” and West Coast slacker style, mills played with ocean-like dye effects. US Group made an indigo tie-dyed kimono jacket. Soorty added mosaic knee patches to skinny jeans, while Bossa decorated jeans with white frayed pin stripes.

Vertical frays added texture to Neela Blue’s button-down shirt. Beximco’s relaxed drawstring jacket and matching shorts offered a beachy alternative to active wear sets.

Grateful Dad

Tie-dye and references to camping and outdoor gear make up Grateful Dad, a story that takes inspiration from the “practical-meets-hippie-style of Glastonbury.”

For the story, Soorty tapped the rainbow for a tie-dyed jean jacket with a frayed hem. Denim De L’Ile Ltd. splashed colorful paint on a denim multi-pocket fisherman vest. A relaxed shacket by US Group was accented with four large front pockets to stash festival essentials. Realtex added cargo pockets to a boxy denim pop-over.

And in lieu of retro piping, Firemount Group added contrasting color fray hems to its short tie-dye shorts.

Spaghetti Western

Color ignites Spaghetti Western, Kingpins’ ode to ’80s and ’90s iconic Italian labels.

Beximco recreated a nautical striped pop-over, complete with an embroidered logo that references old-school Polo and Benetton branding. Soorty pieced Gen Z yellow and indigo denim to make bold, color block overalls. The mill also showcased color block jeans in an ’80s color palette of red, orange and teal.

Ironic Oughties

Denim mills vamped it for Ironic Oughties, a theme that favors raver style and skin-baring silhouettes. A plethora of pockets hang from jeans by Crescent Bahuman. Plush pink cords by In the Loop are the perfect antidote to Artistic Fabric Mills’ edgy cropped color block jacket. Seazon updated the classic Trucker silhouette by mashing together three pairs of jeans.

Meanwhile, Beximco embraced the Y2K-inspired trend story with club kid coveralls, complete with techy logos, D-rings and plastic side release buckles.
