Soorty Taps Green Story to Make Sustainable Data ‘Relatable’

Pakistan’s largest vertically integrated denim producer is providing a window into its manufacturing.

Soorty recently announced a partnership with Green Story, a supply chain sustainability analysis platform, for an extensive life cycle analysis of two garments with differentiated raw materials and garment processes.

Green Story helps mitigate the challenges companies encounter with their consumer-facing sustainability communication and education. The platform uses the global standard of Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) methodology with data sourced from accredited partners to measure the impact of production processes. Green Story then brings them together with easy-to-understand visuals to enhance the customer experience and highlight Soorty’s green choices.

Contributing to the platform as a vertical supplier makes a lot of sense, said Ebru Debbag, Soorty executive director, global sales and marketing. Green Story brings the highest possible accuracy and transparency to their work, seamlessly integrating the results on different platforms to provide education on sustainability and brand credibility.

Or as Debbag explained, makes a very technical process “real and relatable.”

“For sustainability to become a common practice it needs to be communicated to the consumers in a way that would make everyday sense,” she said. “This is where Green Story makes a difference.”

The cradle-to-gate comparative life cycle inventory, Debbag said, encompasses all upstream processes of apparel manufacture from raw material acquisition to fiber and fabric manufacturing. “All the relevant life-stages of sustainable and conventional fabric apparels are analyzed to estimate the net impact savings across three key metrics: GHG emissions, primary energy use and water consumption,” she said.

The analysis does not include impact assessment except for global warming potential impact.

The goal of Soorty’s partnership with Green Story is to prompt consumers to be conscious of the impact of their apparel purchases. Consumers can access the information on the Green Story web site as well as Soorty’s Future Possibilities site. The information can also be used by brand and retailers buying the measured products from Soorty.

“The supply chain is key to closing the loop for circularity and the manufacturers need to be visible,” Debbag said. “The work that is being developed to attain sustainability is so complicated and integrated and yet needs to be communicated to the consumers. Green Story is not just providing the LCA information, but it is a gateway to a community who are leading the change.”
